Pause and Reflect

Build the habit of reflection

Our new self-directed online course gives you everything you need to build the habit of intentional reflection.

Modern jobs demand that we hold multiple intentions in mind simultaneously, switching between tasks, responding to interruptions, and managing competing demands. All while trying to remember the things we’ve committed to doing later. It can feel like we’re just surviving the working week, just making it to the finish line, before attempting to rest and recover at the weekend.

But with all that activity, when do we look up and check if the activity is leading us in the right direction? With all the effort we put into our roles, when do we stop to check that it’s paying off? That’s it’s taking us towards our valued objectives? This is where reflection fits in. An intentional pause to reconnect with what matters, learn from our experience and, where necessary, adjust course.

Why reflection?

So much of the popular advice about productivity at work focuses on efficiency and extracting maximum productivity from each hour.

That’s ‘doing’.

Reflection is thinking about doing, so that we can learn from our experience. Reflection helps us on a number of levels:

  • Understanding the root causes of mistakes
  • Learning from how we’ve navigated difficulties
  • Making the connection between our skills and our results
  • Understanding our role in interdependence with others
  • Reconnection with what matters most to us in life
  • Noticing the impact of small changes in our behaviour
  • Avoiding repetition of mistakes or unhelpful responses

When we reflect, we intentionally reach into our past experience, evaluate our performance, and take any insights and apply them in our future behaviour. So it’s not just revisiting mistakes to relive them. Or wondering what might have been. It’s looking to learn from our past to help our future selves.

How does it work?

The course is completely self-directed and self-paced. So you can take complete it when it suits you.

Hosted on our online personal development community WorkLifeSpark, course registration also includes membership of the community and access to an ‘Office Hours’ session with a psychologist to discuss your progress, your application of the skills, or your reflections. You can choose when to book your session – but we’d recommend doing it after you’ve completed the practical exercises and taken some time to build your reflective practice.

The course itself is a mix of online text, instructional videos, downloadable resources and practical exercises. When taken in combination with an ‘Office Hours’ conversation, it’s a real blended learning experience. You’ll have access to the course materials for 12 months and can download a simple guide to reflection to support your ongoing practice.
