Ep 172: Re-thinking self-care

In this latest episode of our ‘Thriving at Work’ series, Richard takes a fresh look at the concept of self-care.

While it may conjure up images of bubble baths and cups or tea, there’s a lot more to it than that. Richard outlines some quality markers to bear in mind when selecting self-care activities and flags some common pitfalls to avoid. In order to be helpful and make a genuine contribution to our wellbeing, self-care activities should be authentic to us and our needs, sustainable over the long term and appropriate to the actual context we’re in.

When it comes to pitfalls, it’s important to spot when what you’re calling ‘self-care’ is simply avoidance, when it’s an unhealthy activity, when it ends up depleting your limited resource (such a sleep), when it too closely resembles your work and when it’s just an excuse for opting out and neglecting your responsibilities and commitments.

Hopefully you can see that there’s a lot more to it than simply bubble baths (but we’re not ruling them out!). Check out the resources below for related information on self-care, your wellbeing and thriving at work.
