Leadership Coaching
Why leaders benefit from coaching
While everyone can benefit from professional coaching, the unique demands of leadership make it a particularly relevant support for senior organisational stakeholders.
- Coaching can help support leaders to develop the effective self-care and coping strategies that can buffer against the stressors and other demands they can face. This can ultimately protect them against burnout.
- Coaching can support leaders as they focus on improving their health and wellbeing, considering the varied wellbeing challenges they can face.
- Reaching back into their prior experience, leaders may over-rely on strengths to navigate problems, often over-playing strengths and risking career derailment.
- Coaching can help leaders – newly-appointed and long-standing – deal with the challenges of reconciling leadership with their values and self-concept.
- Even in the best of circumstances, coaching can help leaders deal with the inherent pressures that come with leadership responsibility, decision-making and goal-attainment.
- Coaching can also provide leaders with a valuable opportunity to be vulnerable and discuss their fears and doubts, which can be almost impossible with direct reports.
- Leaders can frequently experience a sense of disconnection and loneliness due to the seniority of their position. While surrounded by others, they may feel insufficient connection with those around them and lack access to the social support more junior colleague enjoy.
