Ep 128: Avoiding Derailment, with Lucie Ilbury

In this episode, Richard is joined by Lucie Ilbury, for a discussion about derailment – and how to avoid it.

Derailment occurs when behaviour and performance mean someone’s career advancement is slowed or even halted completely. It can mean someone gets ‘stuck’ at a set level of seniority, or that their employment is terminated completely.

They discuss how building our self-awareness can help us minimise the risk of career derailment.¬†Lucie explores some of the common routes into this negative outcome, including overplaying our strengths. It’s important to think beyond the stereotypes of ‘snakes in suits’ when reflecting on derailment – it can happen to anyone, due to a combination of person, personality and context.
