Ep 128: Avoiding Derailment, with Lucie Ilbury

In this episode, Richard is joined by Lucie Ilbury, for a discussion about derailment – and how to avoid it.

Derailment occurs when behaviour and performance mean someone’s career advancement is slowed or even halted completely. It can mean someone gets ‘stuck’ at a set level of seniority, or that their employment is terminated completely.

They discuss how building our self-awareness can help us minimise the risk of career derailment. Lucie explores some of the common routes into this negative outcome, including overplaying our strengths. It’s important to think beyond the stereotypes of ‘snakes in suits’ when reflecting on derailment – it can happen to anyone, due to a combination of person, personality and context.
