Productivity in the startup world

I’m really looking forward to speaking at another great event organised by the team at Wise Amigo, and hosted by Google at their campus in London.

I’ll be discussing how to remain focused and productive, despite all the various distractions of the modern work environment.

Why productivity?

Well, despite the proliferation of technology designed to make us more productive, we don’t seem to be reaping the promised benefits. The long hours don’t translate into better or more outputs. In fact, the hours can often just translate into exhaustion and a dip in motivation.

How many times have you finished the working day, feeling like you’ve been working really hard, yet still disappointed at the lack of progress you’ve actually made?

Productivity and focus are themes that keep coming up in my coaching work. Clients regularly tell the same story: too much to do, too many meetings and emails, a disruptive and noisy office environment…the list goes on.

Core to getting productive is knowing what your priorities are, then focusing on them. Productivity is really just making sure the important things get done, at the right time. This means a ruthless prioritisation of your work, as well as being honest with yourself about how much distraction comes from other and how much you distract yourself.

If we really want to get more of the important stuff done each day, we need to give it time and attention and shut down as many of the other things vying for our attention.

A simple place to start is turning off automatic notifications from apps and devices. Another is to avoid any attempts at multi-tasking, as we simply can’t do that – no matter what you’ve read. Practice focusing on a single important task, one after another, building in regular breaks to get refreshed, and you’ll be amazed how much more you can get done each day.

The event is free and you can sign up via the Eventbrite website here.
